An Bang Beach, Hoi An

An Bang Beach, Hoi An: a local's guide
An Bang Beach lies about 4 to 5 kilometres northeast of Hoi An Ancient Town, in Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang. It is the closest beach to the old town that still runs on fishing-village rhythm, built along one main street — Nguyen Phan Vinh — with dozens of narrow lanes dropping straight down to the sand.
This is written from inside one of those lanes, not from a tourism brochure.
Where is An Bang Beach, and which province is it in?
An Bang Beach is in Hoi An Tay ward, Da Nang. Until 30 June 2025 the area was part of Cam An ward, Hoi An city, Quang Nam province. In the administrative reorganisation, Cam An was merged with Tan An, Thanh Ha and Cam Ha commune into the new Hoi An Tay ward.
This trips people up when they are booking. Maps and paperwork now say Hoi An Tay, Da Nang, while every travel article still says Cam An, Hoi An, Quang Nam. Both describe the same stretch of coast.
Distances from An Bang Beach:
From An Bang Beach to | Distance | Travel time |
Hoi An Ancient Town | ≈ 4–5 km | 10–15 min by motorbike |
Tan Thanh Beach | 300–500 m | 5–7 min on foot |
Da Nang International Airport | 30 km | 45 minutes |
Cua Dai Beach | ≈ 3 km | 8–10 min by motorbike |
How An Bang differs from Cua Dai and Tan Thanh
An Bang has the most developed tourism infrastructure of the three beaches while staying small in scale. Cua Dai was once Hoi An's main beach but has suffered years of severe erosion; much of the natural sand is gone and has been replaced by sea walls. Tan Thanh sits immediately north of An Bang — quieter, fewer places to eat, and home to most of the long-stay crowd.
Quick distinctions:
1. An Bang — public swimming beach, beach bars and restaurants, busiest of the three in summer
2. Tan Thanh — wilder stretch of sand, cluster of cafés and art spaces, many foreign residents staying long term
3. Cua Dai — mostly large resorts, walled shoreline, little public space
When can you swim at An Bang Beach?
March to August is the reliable swimming window at An Bang Beach: calm sea, clear water, steady sun. From September the sea starts to move, and through October and November swimming is effectively off — heavy surf, murky water, and seasonal erosion along parts of the shore.
Period | Sea conditions | Notes |
March – May | Calm, clear, mild air | The most comfortable months of the year |
June – August | Calm, hot at 33–36°C | Busiest period, book accommodation early |
September | Swell building, short showers | Still swimmable |
October – November | Heavy surf, murky water | Not suitable for swimming |
December – February | Settling down, cold water | Better for walking than swimming |
Getting around and parking at An Bang
The main road in is Nguyen Phan Vinh. Dozens of narrow lanes branch off it — lanes 150, 164, 174 and many more — running straight down to the sand. Most accommodation sits inside those lanes rather than on the main road.
Three things worth knowing first:
1. The lanes are narrow and large cars struggle. If you are arriving in a seven-seater or bigger, ask your accommodation about access before you book. Some houses have parking at the gate; at others you leave the vehicle at the mouth of the lane.
2. There is motorbike parking at the public beach for a small fee, at the end of Nguyen Phan Vinh.
3. A motorbike is the sensible way to cover An Bang to the old town — except in the October and November rains, when the roads are slick and some riverside routes flood.
Where to stay at An Bang Beach
Accommodation at An Bang is mostly whole houses and small villas tucked into the lanes, not high-rise hotels. That is a planning matter: unlike the Da Nang beaches, there is no large-scale construction along this shoreline.
By group size:
• Two to four people: a studio or small apartment, usually deeper into a lane
• A family of five to eight: a whole house with three or four bedrooms and a kitchen
• Nine or more: a five or six bedroom villa, typically with its own pool

Among the whole-house operators at An Bang, HÙA Homes runs several houses across lanes 150, 164 and 174 — from 88 Steps Villa, four bedrooms about 50 metres from the sand, to May Villa, six bedrooms split into two blocks for larger groups. What they share is a kitchen and a garden, which suits the cook-at-home kind of beach trip rather than the resort kind.
Eating at An Bang
Around the public beach and along Nguyen Phan Vinh there are three distinct kinds of place:
1. Beach bars on the sand — grilled seafood, drinks, open into the evening
2. Local places inside the lanes — com ga, mi Quang, banh mi, at a fraction of beachfront prices
3. International restaurants — more concentrated on the Tan Thanh side

How to spend a day at An Bang
1. 6:00–7:00 — An Bang is at its best at sunrise, and this is when the local basket boats come ashore
2. 9:00–11:00 — swim, before the sun gets hard
3. 12:00–15:00 — out of the heat; lunch in the lanes or rest at the house
4. 16:00–18:00 — back to the water, or ride into the old town
5. After 18:00 — beach bars on the sand, or cook at the house if you have a kitchen
Three things visitors get wrong about An Bang
1. An Bang is not a resort's private beach. It is a residential area with a market, a church and people living in it. Mornings come with ward loudspeakers and boat engines.
2. "Close to the beach" does not always mean a short walk. The lanes are long and they bend. Ask for the distance in metres and do not rely on the word beachside.
3. The rainy season is fine to visit — you just cannot swim. An Bang functions normally through October and November; the sea is the only thing that shuts down.
